Data of 11.5m gamblers in Africa are in the hands of hackers

Leading Kenya telecommunications company Safaricom is facing another hurdle after a lawsuit alleged that the privacy of its customers had been compromised. The lawsuit asserted that someone had the possession of Safaricom data for 11.5 million subscribers, which include full names, phone numbers, identification numbers, passport numbers, and total amount wagered by those who used their Safaricom number to place bets online. If the court sides with the complainant, the company will have to pay each of the affected customers – all 11.5 million – around $100,000 (10 million Kenyan shillings).
