The Story

The Philippine National Police has closed over 30k retail points of sale offering Lotto, numbers and keno businesses following a directive issued by President Rodrigo Duterte. The tough-talking President accused the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), which operated the retail points of sale, of “massive corruption,” apparently due to the state-run entity’s failure to remit the required share of its proceeds to the government. A Commission on Audit report earlier this month claimed the PCSO was P8.4b (US$165m) in arrears for the period spanning 1994-2016.
