The Story

The Chinese embassy has asked the Philippine government to take action to safeguard the welfare of its citizens who are working for Philippine online gambling sites and casinos. The embassy said a “large number” of Chinese nationals have been illegally recruited to work in call centers for online gambling sites after being promised to get technology-related jobs. Gambling operators allegedly confiscate the passports of these Chinese workers and subject them to inhumane working conditions. The Chinese embassy also noted that these sites have “severely undermined China’s financial supervision and financial security” by helping gamblers evade China’s strict capital controls.
